Jonathan Satovsky reflects on his recent experience of playing golf at The Old Course at St Andrews, drawing parallels between the sport and life lessons that any investor can take to heart.
The Old Course at St Andrews, the origin of golf.
I had the privilege of being able to play there with my father, no less, recently.
And there were some tremendous lessons learned that apply to life and finances, and I wanted to share them today.
1. Tradition
It is a beautiful thing. You develop certain traditions, certain customs, and certain habits, and they carry the test of time if they’re rooted in good and a good foundation.
2. Bunkers
The second thing is there are a lot of amazing bunkers. They’re all named – they have names for all their bunkers, and the bunkers are insane.
Of course, I had the good fortune to land in one of the bunkers, as you see by the photo, and it’s analogous to life.
You can hit a perfect drive, you can do everything right, and sometimes the world is not functioning the way you like it to in finance and investing. Sometimes things just aren’t clicking.
You end up in a bunker, you end up in a pothole, you end up getting a setback and it’s important to stay calm, to stay focused, to stay disciplined and keep working on the fundamentals.
It’s an opportunity to improve and learn from every experience. So think about that, whether you’re playing at Old St Andrews or whether you’re saving for your future financial freedom.
There are going to be setbacks, there are going to be bunkers, there are going to be potholes, and you have to keep going on your path to Wisdom, Wealth, and Wellness.
Have a great day.
